It's a bit worrying.

by la_spice @ 2008-05-02 - 05:00:00

I've just thought - "now that is worrying" I hear you cry!

Where was I?

I've just realised that some of the expressions my Mother used to use are now archaic and that many bloggers will probably have to "google" them to find out what I'm talking about.

Here's mine:

"You're beginning to sound like a cracked record"

OR

"Anyone would think you'd been injected with a gramophone needle"

Can you think of an example of your own?

What's a grammaphone? Don't tell me... it's something a Nanna uses to chat to her grandchildren... :>>

You did mean gramophone, didn't you? :))

I wasn't sure of the spelling so checked it out first:

I think there are a few ways to spell it

Not according to the OED ;)

OK I've changed it!

My Mum was brought up in Canada though!!!!

Oh well that makes all the difference.... the American influence no doubt! :))

That's it - would you believe I don't have an English dictionary and the longer I live here the more difficult it becomes to remember some English spellings.

Some words simply don't look right - I typed gramophone a few ways before I googled it. I must save an English source as a "favourite"

Ah well - I'm still waiting to hear one of your archaic phrases!

"Well go to the foot of our stairs!"

"It's a bit black over Bill's mother's"

There are lots of great phrases like these from Lincolnshire.

Cheers, Tom.

I guess those two could still apply today. Whereas gramophones and records are something my grandchildren wouldn't easily associate with.

Regional phrases are terrific in their own right - coming from Yorkshire, as I did, there are endless phrases.

Have a lovely weekend

True, kids wouldn't know what a gramophone was now. But then most people wouldn't be able to work out why they should stand at the foot of the stairs either. The Upstairs/Downstairs concept is thoroughly unfamiliar to anyone under 30 or so, I'd have thought.

Have a lovely weekend yourself :-)

Cheers, Tom.

Ah - I hadn't thought of it in terms of being "in-service".

I just thought my Mum meant "our stairs" as in our stairs! :))

how about "that'll mek yer tabs laff!" (about the effect of fizzy sweets or raw lemon!)

or" geroff yer chatty beggar!" (get off you dirty little devil!)

:)) Old Nottingham expressions (ayup mi duck!)

Here's one - she's got a face like a ripped dap (dap being an early version of trainers.... like gym shoes.) :)
